The World's End, Breathe In, Wadjda: this week's new films Jul 20th 2013, 05:00

The World's End | Breathe In | Wadjda | The Frozen Ground | Easy Money | Eden | Suspension Of Disbelief | Roman Holiday | D-Day

The World's End (15)
(Edgar Wright, 2013 UK) Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, Paddy Considine, Martin Freeman, Eddie Marsan, Rosamund Pike. 109 mins

Wright brings another Hollywood scenario down to earth by virtue of an utterly British setting, and the clash is still hilarious. Especially for the 1990s generation, since this sees Pegg and co attempting to relive their youth with an indie-dance-backed pub crawl down memory lane. Has their hometown changed because of high-street homogenisation, robotic infiltration, or the effects of 12 pints? All three, it turns out.

Breathe In (15)
(Drake Doremus, 2013, US) Felicity Jones, Guy Pearce, Amy Ryan. 97 mins

As he did with Like Crazy, Doremus tells an age-old story with uncanny intimacy and powerful acting, particularly from Jones. Playing an exchange student in New England, she's drawn to Pearce's musician dad, with inevitable consequences.

Wadjda (PG)
(Haifaa al-Mansour, 2012, Sau/Ger) Waad Mohammed, Reem Abdulla, Abdullrahman Al Gohani. 97 mins

A spirited young girl's mission to obtain a bicycle opens a window into the hemmed-in world of Saudi Arabian femininity in this small-scale drama. It's as charming as it is pioneering.

The Frozen Ground (15)
(Scott Walker, 2013, US) Nicolas Cage, John Cusack, Vanessa Hudgens, Dean Norris, Radha Mitchell. 105 mins

The Alaskan setting and Cusack as a serial killer are just about all that stand out about this true-life cop thriller, in which a weary Cage knows whodunnit, but just can't nail him for it.

Easy Money (15)
(Daniel Espinosa, 2010, Swe) Joel Kinnaman, Matias Varela, Dragomir Mrsic. 122 mins

Aiming for that Stieg Larsson crossover, this dense, multicultural saga links Stockholm's high society with its criminal underworld, the police and the Serbian mafia, via a web of conflicted characters. The US remake is already in the works.

Eden (15)
(Megan Griffiths, 2012, US) Jaime Chung, Matt O'Leary, Beau Bridges. 111 mins

Chung excels as a teen sex slave who ends up co-operating with her New Mexican abductors, in a responsible thriller based on a horrific real-life incident.

Suspension Of Disbelief (15)
(Mike Figgis, 2012, UK) Sebastian Koch, Lotte Verbeek, Emilia Fox, Lachlan Nieboer. 112 mins

Figgis enjoys messing with fiction and reality in this cerebral, almost Lynchian experiment, centred on Koch's screenwriter, who could be responsible for a woman's disappearance, even as he romances her twin sister.

Roman Holiday (U)
(William Wyler, 1953, US) Audrey Hepburn, Gregory Peck, Eddie Albert, Hartley Power. 135 mins

60th-anniversary reissue for the reverse-Cinderella fairytale that launched Hepburn and a million European vacations.

D-Day (NC)
(Nikhil Advani, 2013, Ind) Arjun Rampal, Rishi Kapoor, Irrfan Khan. 153 mins

Tough thriller following four agents on a mission to bring back India's most wanted man from Pakistan.
