Chances are that while you may not have heard the musical output of Derbyshire brothers Eoin and Rory Loveless, aka Drenge (Danish for "boys"), you've probably heard the name of late. Two weeks ago the then Labour Party general election co-ordinator, Tom Watson, handed in his resignation, seemingly after having had an epiphany during Drenge's ferocious set at this year's Glastonbury festival. In an open letter to Ed Milliband on his blog, Watson explained he'd grown frustrated with some convoluted political selection process or other, before adding that it was important Milliband enjoy his life outside of politics: "So: be that great Labour leader that you can be, but try to have a real life too. And if you want to see an awesome band, I recommend Drenge." This lead to some frantic Google searches and a Twitter race to try and get the band's first reaction. When it came it was slightly disappointing: "Hi all. We're in Roskilde, Denmark. We've got to play a gig in 40 minutes, but nice to meet you all. E+R". Thankfully, for the sake of rock and roll, after having some time to think about it the duo decided that actually it possibly wasn't the ideal situation for people to discover their music, telling the BBC: "It's got nothing to do with us really, we've had no involvement in it. It's just a guy signing off in a quirky manner and mentioning us...I'm not totally overjoyed that it happened but at the same time I don't really care." Care or not, chances are more people are going to hear their new single, the In Utero-esque Face Like A Skull – premiered here – off the back of the hoopla and on balance that's probably a good thing, not least because as opposed to the weedy, non-committal UK guitar music of late, Drenge appear to at least have some fire in their bellies.
Face Like A Skull is out on 26 August via Mad Mark/Infectious. Their self-titled album is out a week earlier.
